A Soviet themed bar near Kitai Gorod

Just a short walk from Kitai Gorod metro station is an interesting basement bar with a retro Soviet Union theme. As you go down the steps and enter the bar, you’ll see that it’s decorated with several soviet arcade machines (they don’t work), while another wall is filled with replicas of old soviet medals. The tables are designed to look like they’re held up by old VCRs and books. One smaller wall is made up from old cassette boxes. The Soviet theme continues on the menus: the bar’s slogan translates to “workers of the world unite!”.

A popular drink with the Russian locals was the celery flavoured liquoer, costing 130 roubles. Many ordered one with a beer or another drink. However, it didn’t go down well with the foreign group, so it could well be an acquired taste! There are more conventional flavours too. The cherry liqueor, costing 190 roubles for 50ml proved to be very popular.

They have a selection of around 10 vodkas, ranging from the House vodka for 70 roubles, to grey goose for 230 roubles. Vodkas are sold in 50ml shots. They have 5 beers on offer: bar’s own brand (140 roubles), wheat beer (150 roubles). Hollander (150 roubles), English ale (150 roubles), and Stout (150 roubles). They have most of the famous brand whiskeys, scotches, and bourbons, with the house brand the cheapest at 100 roubles for 40ml, and Jack Daniels sold for 200 roubles.

Opening times

The bar seems slightly surreal while you’re in there. Nevertheless, the cheaper prices and friendly staff made the experience definitely worthwhile. The bar is open Sunday to Thursday 12pm-12am and 24 hours on Friday and Saturday.   Address is ul. Solyanka, 2/6, Moscow, 101000.

Lawrence Toye, currently studying at Liden & Denz Moscow

Привет Everyone! My name is Lawrence, I’m 21, from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK, and I’m pleased to say I’m the new social media intern at Liden&Denz Moscow for the next 5 weeks. This is only my first day in Moscow, so I still have so much to see and take in! I love learning languages and spent last year living in the Middle East and studying Arabic. When I started studying at politics and economics at university last September, I couldn’t resist doing a language course alongside. Even though I could’ve probably picked an easier language, I felt Russian would be the most rewarding. I was right! Despite the frequently confusing grammar, in particular the cases, I thoroughly enjoyed it. As I’ve finished university for the summer, I decided to come here to to Liden&Denz to improve my Russian, and learn more about Russian culture. This is only my first full day in Russia, and I’m really excited to write about my thoughts, insights, and experiences of Moscow and learning Russian.
