Retro Cinema in St. Pete: Dom Kino and Rodina

03 October 2013

Dom Kino (Дом Кино) and Rodina (Родина) are two chic and retro cinema theatres near the Square of Arts (Площадь Искусств), a famous place for classical theatres and cultural museums.

The two cinemas are located in the same complex, which has been one of the oldest cinema theatres since the 60s. This is an historic building for Russian cinema, since it is the place where the first Soviet film was shown. Now it stands as the only theatre in the city where you can watch movies in English or with subtitles.

Dom Kino stands out for its careful movie selection: it avoids mainstream films and focuses mainly on art movies, like the winners of prestigious international festivals. Every now and then, the cinema organizes retrospective projections of famous directors or events like German, French, Chinese cinema weeks.

Its companion cinema, Rodina, has a strange and eclectic selection of movies: from blockbusters and children cartoons to alternative movies and nights of anime screenings. Their monthly program “Silent Movie+Live Music” is particularly interesting: silent films are accompanied by music specifically composed by famous artists from St. Petersburg.

Dom Kino and Rodina are just 5 minutes away from Liden & Denz. Don’t get confused when you’re looking for one of the two cinema theatres, since they are next door to each other.
