International Women’s Day
05 March, 2014
International Women’s Day (Междунаро́дный же́нский день) is coming up this weekend! Celebrated on the 8th of March, this national holiday is a political celebration to symbolise the fight of women all over the world for equality, democracy and peace.
Although still a political holiday across the world, in Russia the political motives have been reduced a bit, and Women’s Day is more like the Western Mother’s Day, although here Russians celebrate all women on the 8th of March, including family members, colleagues and friends!
Men and women give flowers, chocolate and other gifts to the important women in their life, and some Russian men like to do all the household chores on this day so that their women can enjoy a full day of rest.
International Women’s Day is a national holiday in Russia, so office workers tend to celebrate the day before, and bring presents for the women in the office, and often have a small office party with cake and champagne!
The traditional way to celebrate is to spend time at home with friends and family, so make sure you’ve got a small present (or a big present!) for your loved ones to celebrate wonderful women!
