Zenit Rise to the Top
25 April, 2014
Following a cracking 4-1 victory over Krasnodar on the 12th of April and a 2-1 victory over Anzhi Makhackala, St Petersburg’s football team, Zenit, has risen to the top of the Russian Premier League with just four games left to play.
“This was an important victory, a very important one,” Zenit’s manager Andre Villas-Boas said after the game. “I liked how the players were able to get together and played well after giving up a goal. I think the team will continue in the same spirit, since it’s training well, and showing good football.”
Zenit are in a good position to go on to win the league now, thanks to the latest win and the fact that the former leaders, Lokomotic Moscow, drew 0-0 with last-placed Anzhi Makhachkala on Sunday. If Zenit win the rest of their games, they’ll be league champions for the third time in four years!
After beating Anzhi Makhackala last weekend, Zenit are playing Volga Nizhny Novgorod tomorrow at 16.30 at home. Tickets are still available to see the match, and prices start from just 500 roubles, so it’s worth heading over to one of the Zenit shops in the city centre (try the one on Nevsky Prospect, on the corner of Malaya Sadovaya) if you’re into football! You can also buy some great merchandise like scarves, flags and even the full football kit, if you’re so inclined!
With Zenit on such good form, their match against Lokomotiv in Moscow on the 4th of May looks as if it could be the title decider. Keep an eye on the scores and hopefully we’ll be able to see the city celebrate a domineering victory!
The season finishes on the 15th of May.
